Special Notes for Flying Squirrels
Flying squirrels can eat the regular Healthy Diet for Pet Squirrels - including blocks, vegetables, wild foods, and limited treats. However, flying squirrels need more protein than other species of squirrels.
Because of their small size, proper nutrition is even more critical for flyers than other species of squirrels. Flying squirrels are especially prone to dietary deficiencies such as Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) and it is much harder to treat in flyers. So it is best to prevent these problems by feeding a healthy diet, including lots of extra protein.
Wombaroo’s High Protein Supplement is a fantastic way to fortify the diet of Sugar Gliders and Flying Squirrels. This supplement supports a balanced diet for animals while providing protein for growth and calcium for bone health.
You can add protein to your flyer’s diet by including some of the items listed below on a daily basis:
- Acorn worms
- Chicken, freshly cooked and plain
- Chicken, dehydrated chips (make sure they are all natural, not made in China)
- Cicadas
- Crickets
- Eggs (hard-boiled or scrambled)
- Grasshoppers
- Grubs
- Mealworms
- Moths
- Waxworms
